Supercharge your home care with these new and improved Dermalogica masques

Written by Sarah Purves

Why should we use a Masque?

Masques are a beneficial step which consumers frequently overlook. Masque formulations are highly concentrated & designed to remain in contact with the skin for a specific period of time. Within the 10-15 minutes of the masque staying on your skin it delivers potent “problem solving’ ingredients deep into the skin.

Shellac

I’d heard a lot about SHELLAC and was eager to try it. Constantly working with my hands, I am a serial chipper, usually smudging some ones good work before I have even left the salon. A polish lasting two weeks, not the usual two or three days, sounded too good to be true and I was hoping it was going to deliver all that was promised. As my beautician removed my old polish she explained to me what was different about Shellac. After the special polish is applied to your nails, they are placed under a UV light off and on for about five minutes in total. This allows for the polish to set and seal, hence the lasting properties. The first thing that struck me after the drying time under the UV light was how amazingly shiny my nails looked. They were positively gleaming and the best thing, instantly dry! That’s a god send for someone like me who dreads reaching into my bag to pay for my treatment for fear of smudging. It has been a week now and not a crack or chip in sight and they rea...

How does Intense Pulsed Light work?

An intense pulse of light is attracted to the excess (brown) melanin in the skin and the excess (red) haemoglobin in blood vessels. The heat generated by the light destroys cells containing the excess melanin (eg in age spots) and haemoglobin (eg rosacea) without damaging the surrounding tissue. The Intense Pulsed Light may cause slight discomfort or tingling. It has been likened to flicking a rubber band against the skin. A mild sunburn like sensation is expected which usually resolves in 2 - 72 hours. The pigmented areas may initially look raised and/or darker with a reddened perimeter and may turn dark brown or even black over the next 24 - 48 hours. This will then lead to scabs and crusting which usually heals in 7 - 30 days and will continue to fade over the next 2 - 8 weeks.

Although the improvement on the surface of the skin may be quick and exciting to see, the most important work is really happening under the skin where the body's o...

Laser Hair Removal

How does it work? Intense Pulsed Light produces wavelengths of highly concentrated light which is selectively absorbed by the melanin found in hair. The melanin in the hair absorbs the light, and the heat that is produced will cause thermal destruction of the follicle without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Who can benefit from Intense Pulsed Light Therapy? The treatment is suitable for anyone who has unwanted dark hair growth. Even people with darker skin types can be treated. The large spot size of the handpiece enables large and small areas to be treated in a safe, fast, gentle and effective way.

How many treatments are required? Intense Pulsed Light treats hairs which are in growth (anagen) phase. At any one time a percentage of hair follicles will be in the resting stage (telogen). These hairs will need to be treated at the next visit when they have progressed from telogen to anagen in the hair growth cycle. Eight to ten sessions may be needed depending on the indiv...

Miracle Oil

I was a little skeptical about miracle oil. With all the claims it made I thought it was too good to be true! Apparently good for cuticles and nails, waxing and shaving irritation, dryness, insect bites, minor cuts and burns, piercings, tattoos, sunburn, stretch marks, scars and much more. I thought… is there nothing MIRACLE OIL can’t do? So I decided to put this little wonder to the test and see if it ticked all the boxes. After a day at the beach I was quite pink and called upon the oils miraculous healing powers to sooth my sunburn…. Tick! I also thought I’d apply it to my brittle nails and damaged cuticles for some repairing…Tick! A little paper cut… Tick! A mosquito bite… Tick! I gave it to some friends who recently had some piercings and tattoos...Tick! Tick! Tick! I have been applying it diligently to a scar I have on my leg and although I’m sure that it may take a little while longer to see the results, I have faith. With its nine natural oils including hempseed (apparently...
