How does Intense Pulsed Light work?
An intense pulse of light is attracted to the excess (brown) melanin in the skin and the excess (red) haemoglobin in blood vessels. The heat generated by the light destroys cells containing the excess melanin (eg in age spots) and haemoglobin (eg rosacea) without damaging the surrounding tissue. The Intense Pulsed Light may cause slight discomfort or tingling. It has been likened to flicking a rubber band against the skin. A mild sunburn like sensation is expected which usually resolves in 2 - 72 hours. The pigmented areas may initially look raised and/or darker with a reddened perimeter and may turn dark brown or even black over the next 24 - 48 hours. This will then lead to scabs and crusting which usually heals in 7 - 30 days and will continue to fade over the next 2 - 8 weeks.
Although the improvement on the surface of the skin may be quick and exciting to see, the most important work is really happening under the skin where the body's own collagen is kick started by the pulsed light, and as the weeks go by, the skin becomes noticebly smoother and younger looking. This work continues on in the background for months after each treatment is done. Even one treatment can make a noticeable difference, but a series of four or five treatments can make the skin look many years younger and fresher.
